For people with diabetes, long-standing raised blood glucose can increase the risk of heart disease, kidney disease, and vision loss. And a pre-diabetic would want to do everything in their power to avoid diabetes.

Cutting back on sugary foods helps, but you don’t need to avoid all types of sweet food. Some fruits can be enjoyed and still help you maintain a healthy sugar level.

Read on for some fruits recommended by nutritionists.

Blueberries

Blueberries are one of the best fruits for blood sugar. They offer a fiber content of 3.5 grams per cup and a low Glycemic Index (Glycemic Index) of 53. A multiple study review found these indigo-colored berries could have an anti-diabetic effect in humans and animals, but more research is required.

Tomatoes

For the sake of this article, we’ll group tomatoes under “fruit.” However, they are also considered a vegetable. They are low on the GI and low in carbs, so they won’t significantly increase your blood glucose.

On the other hand, tomato sauces and such products often have added sugar, so it’s better to stick to raw tomatoes for the most nutrients and antioxidants.

Oranges

Oranges can be very sweet, so it may be surprising that it’s on this list. Orange juice can send blood glucose sky-high, but whole oranges are different. Depending on the type, their precise GI score is debatable. It’s somewhere low on the category around the 33 and 52 mark. Oranges also offer antioxidant benefits such as anti-inflammatory vitamin C and high fiber.

Fruit for a Healthy Blood Sugar Level

Other fruits with a low GI include blackberries, dates, cherries, grapefruit, pears, strawberries, grapes, and apples.
