When you hear "frozen burrito," breakfast might come to mind, but the frozen food aisle is packed with savory, anytime options. From hearty beans and cheese to beef and plant-based varieties, there's a frozen burrito to satisfy every craving.

While most frozen burritos stick to the basics— a flour tortilla wrapped around a savory, cheese-filled center— they differ greatly in flavor, texture, and nutritional value.

I tried six widely available frozen burritos from top brands, including options for vegans, vegetarians, and meat lovers. Each was prepared according to the package instructions and tasted fresh out of the microwave.

Here’s how they ranked, from my least favorite to the absolute best.

San Luis Bean & Cheese Burrito

Nutrition (Per 1 Burrito):

  • Calories: 550
  • Fat: 20 g (Saturated Fat: 8 g)
  • Sodium: 1,200 mg
  • Carbs: 78 g (Fiber: 4 g, Sugar: 5 g)
  • Protein: 16 g

With 1,200 milligrams of sodium—over half the recommended daily intake—this burrito is on the saltier side. The ingredient list is quite long, featuring several hard-to-pronounce items and food dyes. The vegetarian filling consists of pinto beans and cheddar, and it comes at a price of $4.76.

The Look:
This burrito is the largest of the ones I sampled, though only by a gram. Wrapped in a pale white flour tortilla, the filling is a smooth blend of refried beans and cheese. However, the lack of a distinct layer of melty cheese on top made it visually underwhelming.

The Taste:
The tortilla turned out tough and dried out, even though I followed the cooking instructions. The filling-to-tortilla ratio felt off, with too much tortilla and not enough cheesy goodness. That said, the filling had a nice kick and was well-seasoned, adding a redeeming touch.

Evol Bean, Rice & Cheddar Burrito

Nutrition (Per 1 Burrito):

  • Calories: 400
  • Fat: 14 g (Saturated Fat: 5 g)
  • Sodium: 260 mg
  • Carbs: 54 g (Fiber: 5 g, Sugar: 3 g)
  • Protein: 13 g

This smaller burrito is filled with pinto beans, brown rice, and cheddar, seasoned with tomatoes, mixed peppers, onions, and a hint of honey and cilantro. The ingredients are mostly organic, and it’s priced at $3.87.

The Look:
The flour tortilla has a natural, cooked appearance with brown dots, a flaky texture, and slight blistering. The filling is generous, with gooey cheese spilling over, visible white rice grains, and a mix of whole and mashed beans.

The Taste:
The tortilla is soft, pliable, and stretchy, holding a substantial amount of filling—so much that it burst in the microwave. The gooey cheese is a standout, but the low sodium content left the flavor slightly underwhelming, as the rice made it taste a bit bland. A touch more salt would have elevated it.

Alpha Mexicali Burrito

Nutrition (Per 1 Burrito):

  • Calories: 260
  • Fat: 12 g (Saturated Fat: 8 g)
  • Sodium: 470 mg
  • Carbs: 29 g (Fiber: 3 g, Sugar: 4 g)
  • Protein: 12 g

This vegan burrito features Violife plant-based cheese, a meat-free beefy crumble, onions, bell peppers, whole black beans, and taco sauce. It’s priced at $4.98.

The Look:
Wrapped in a flour tortilla, the filling has a chunkier texture compared to most burritos. The tortilla, folded multiple times around the plant-based meat filling, loosened when heated. Unlike other burritos in this taste test, the black beans were left whole rather than mashed, giving it a distinct appearance.

The Taste:
The burrito delivered a strong nutty flavor, likely from the plant-based "beefy crumble," though there’s no sesame or nuts (aside from coconut oil) listed in the ingredients—an intriguing mystery. The crumbly filling provided a chewier texture than those made with mashed beans, while the vegan cheese added a rich, oily quality that complemented the overall taste.

Amy's Beans, Rice and Cheddar Cheese Burrito

Nutrition (Per 1 Burrito):

  • Calories: 350
  • Fat: 11 g (Saturated Fat: 2.5 g)
  • Sodium: 580 mg
  • Carbs: 50 g (Fiber: 7 g, Sugar: 2 g)
  • Protein: 12 g

Amy’s is known for its high-quality organic products, and this frozen burrito is no exception. The filling is a satisfying blend of pinto beans, brown rice, veggies, and cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses. It’s priced at $5.49.

The Look:
This burrito’s tortilla leans heavily on whole wheat flour, giving it a darker brown color and a thinner texture. It’s tightly wrapped around the filling of beans, rice, and cheese, with the cheese layer separated by a bit of tortilla. This design may help maintain ingredient integrity during freezing and microwaving, without compromising the eating experience.

The Taste:
There’s a bit more tortilla than I would prefer, and it could benefit from a dip in salsa or hot sauce to add some moisture. The bean filling is soft, creamy, and flavorful—I just found myself wishing for more of it to balance out the extra tortilla.

Red's Cheesy Beef & Bean Burrito

Nutrition (Per 1 Burrito):

  • Calories: 350
  • Fat: 15 g (Saturated Fat: 5 g)
  • Sodium: 510 mg
  • Carbs: 40 g (Fiber: 2 g, Sugar: 1 g)
  • Protein: 14 g

This meat-filled burrito features ground beef paired with pinto beans, yellow cheddar cheese, and seasonings like jalapeño peppers, chipotle chili powder, and garlic powder. Wrapped in a plain flour tortilla, it’s priced at $4.19.

The Look:
This burrito is the smallest and most tightly wrapped of the bunch. The crumbly beef filling is packed snugly into the white flour tortilla, making it easy to heat and eat without any messy spills or filling explosions.

The Taste:
Simple yet satisfying, this burrito delivers. The filling-to-tortilla ratio is spot on, and the beef is rich and flavorful without being overly greasy. The pinto beans provide a creamy texture, while the cheese melts perfectly, adding a savory finish to this well-balanced bite.

Vista Hermoas Burrito Bueno, Bean y Oaxaca Cheese

Nutrition (Per 1 Burrito):

  • Calories: 430
  • Fat: 14 g (Saturated Fat: 3.5 g)
  • Sodium: 800 mg
  • Carbs: 58 g (Fiber: 6 g, Sugar: 2 g)
  • Protein: 16 g

This premium frozen burrito is crafted by Tacombi Taqueria, a New York City-based favorite. It’s filled with pinto and black beans, white rice, Oaxaca cheese, and cactus, complemented by a vibrant sauce made with tomatoes, onions, chilies, and tomatillos. Priced at $6.49, it offers a gourmet touch.

The Look:
This burrito is generously sized and packed with filling. The flour tortilla shows natural variation from being cooked on a comal, with darker speckles giving it a rustic appearance. The filling has a mix of textures, combining both whole and mashed beans for a hearty look.

The Taste:
The standout feature is the zesty tomato-based salsa, delivering a punchy, bright, and fresh flavor that’s impressive for a frozen meal. It carries a hint of heat, while the mixed bean filling provides a satisfying texture. This burrito strikes a perfect balance of bold flavors and hearty comfort.
