When you think of "frozen burrito," breakfast might be the first thing that comes to mind. However, the frozen food aisle offers plenty of savory, anytime options. With choices ranging from beans and cheese to beef and plant-based varieties, there’s a frozen burrito to satisfy nearly every craving.
While most burritos stick to the basics—a flour tortilla wrapped around a savory, cheese-filled center—they can vary significantly in flavor, texture, and nutritional value.
I sampled six widely available frozen burritos from top brands, including vegan, vegetarian, and meat-based options. Each one was prepared according to the package instructions and tasted fresh out of the microwave.
Here’s how they ranked, starting with my least favorite and ending with the very best.
San Luis Bean & Cheese Burrito
Nutrition (Per 1 Burrito):
- Calories: 550
- Fat: 20 g (Saturated Fat: 8 g)
- Sodium: 1,200 mg
- Carbs: 78 g (Fiber: 4 g, Sugar: 5 g)
- Protein: 16 g
With a staggering 1,200 milligrams of sodium—more than half the daily recommended intake—this burrito is on the saltier side. The ingredient list is lengthy, featuring several hard-to-pronounce additives and food dyes. The vegetarian filling includes pinto beans and cheddar cheese. Price: $4.76.
The Look:
This was the largest burrito I sampled (by just 1 gram). Wrapped in a pale white flour tortilla, the filling of refried beans and cheese is blended into a smooth, paste-like consistency. Unfortunately, it lacks the satisfying layer of melty cheese on top.
The Taste:
The tortilla was tough and slightly dried out, even after following the cooking instructions. The filling-to-tortilla ratio felt off, with too much tortilla and not enough cheesy richness. That said, the filling had a pleasant kick and was well-seasoned, though it didn’t quite make up for the shortcomings.
Evol Bean, Rice & Cheddar Burrito
Nutrition (Per 1 Burrito):
- Calories: 400
- Fat: 14 g (Saturated Fat: 5 g)
- Sodium: 260 mg
- Carbs: 54 g (Fiber: 5 g, Sugar: 3 g)
- Protein: 13 g
This smaller-sized burrito is filled with pinto beans, brown rice, and cheddar, seasoned with tomatoes, mixed peppers, onions, a touch of honey, and cilantro. The ingredients are mostly organic, and it’s priced at $3.87.
The Look:
The flour tortilla features natural brown cooking spots, with a flaky, blistered texture. The filling is abundant, with gooey, overflowing cheese, visible grains of white rice, and a mix of whole and mashed beans.
The Taste:
The tortilla is soft, pliable, and stretchy, holding a generous amount of filling that even burst through the wrapper in the microwave. The cheese adds a rich creaminess, but the overall flavor could use more seasoning. With the lowest sodium content of all the burritos I tried, this one felt a bit bland, especially due to the rice. A pinch of salt or some salsa could really elevate it.
Alpha Mexicali Burrito
Nutrition (Per 1 Burrito):
- Calories: 260
- Fat: 12 g (Saturated Fat: 8 g)
- Sodium: 470 mg
- Carbs: 29 g (Fiber: 3 g, Sugar: 4 g)
- Protein: 12 g
This vegan burrito features Violife plant-based cheese, a meat-free beefy crumble, onions, bell peppers, whole black beans, and taco sauce. It’s priced at $4.98.
The Look:
Wrapped in a flour tortilla, the filling has a chunkier texture compared to most. The tortilla, folded multiple times around the plant-based meat, loosened slightly when heated. Unlike many other burritos, the black beans are left whole rather than mashed, adding to its unique texture.
The Taste:
This burrito offers a strong nutty flavor, likely from the plant-based "beefy crumble," though no nuts or sesame (apart from coconut oil) appear on the ingredient list—an intriguing mystery. The crumbly filling provides a chewier texture than burritos with mashed beans, while the vegan cheese adds a rich, slightly oily quality that complements the overall flavor.
Amy's Beans, Rice and Cheddar Cheese Burrito
Nutrition (Per 1 Burrito):
- Calories: 350
- Fat: 11 g (Saturated Fat: 2.5 g)
- Sodium: 580 mg
- Carbs: 50 g (Fiber: 7 g, Sugar: 2 g)
- Protein: 12 g
I’ve always loved Amy’s soups and canned beans, and this frozen burrito lives up to the brand’s reputation for high-quality organic ingredients. The filling features a mix of pinto beans, brown rice, veggies, and a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses. Price: $5.49.
The Look:
This tortilla contains more whole wheat flour than the others I sampled, giving it a darker brown hue and a thinner texture. It’s tightly wrapped around the filling of beans, rice, and cheese, with a separate layer of tortilla surrounding the cheese. This design seems to help preserve the filling’s integrity during freezing and microwaving and didn’t detract from the eating experience.
The Taste:
The burrito had a bit more tortilla than I’d prefer, leaving me wanting a dip in salsa or hot sauce to add moisture. However, the bean filling was soft, creamy, and flavorful—I just wished there was more of it to balance the excess tortilla.
Red's Cheesy Beef & Bean Burrito
Nutrition (Per 1 Burrito):
- Calories: 350
- Fat: 15 g (Saturated Fat: 5 g)
- Sodium: 510 mg
- Carbs: 40 g (Fiber: 2 g, Sugar: 1 g)
- Protein: 14 g
This meat-filled burrito comes wrapped in a plain flour tortilla. The filling features ground beef combined with pinto beans and yellow cheddar cheese, seasoned with jalapeño peppers, chipotle chili powder, and garlic powder. Price: $4.19.
The Look:
This was the smallest and most tightly wrapped burrito I tried. The crumbly beef filling was neatly packed inside the white flour tortilla, making it easy to heat and enjoy without any messy spills or explosions.
The Taste:
Simple yet satisfying, this burrito delivered on flavor. The filling-to-tortilla ratio was just right, and the beef was rich and flavorful without being greasy. The pinto beans added a creamy texture, and the cheese melted beautifully, providing a perfectly savory finish.

This premium frozen burrito is crafted by New York City-based Tacombi Taqueria. It features a hearty filling of pinto and black beans, white rice, Oaxaca cheese, and cactus, complemented by a vibrant sauce made with tomatoes, onions, chilis, and tomatillos. Price: $6.49.
The Look:
This burrito is substantial and packed with filling. The flour tortilla shows natural variation from being cooked on a comal, with darker speckles that give it a rustic appearance. Inside, the filling combines the textures of whole and mashed beans for a visually appealing and satisfying bite.
The Taste:
The zesty, tomato-based salsa is the standout feature, delivering a bright, punchy, and fresh flavor that’s hard to believe came from the freezer. It has a touch of heat, while the mixed bean filling adds texture and heartiness. This burrito offers a perfect balance of bold flavors and satisfying substance.
